The Pig That Went to War, June 15, 1859
Lyman Cutler became enraged by Charly Griffin's refusal to keep his hogs penned in. When Cutler emerged from his home on the morning of June 15, 1859 and saw Griffin's Boar rooting in his potato patch, he grabbed his gun and went for bacon. When the hog quit running at the woods' edge, Cutler took aim and shot him dead.
We know almost nothing about Cutler and what little we do know about the man is of no consequence, But when you had a Governor in Victoria who didn't care for Americans, a General with questionable motives trying to make a name for himself, hostile Indians, and impecunious fortune hunters, all it took was the flash of Cutler's gun to ignite these volatile elements.
