Dr. Minert and a team of researchers at BYU are currently involved in a project wherein they read and extract Americans' German vital records from historic local church vital records. These church records often pinpoint German origins in the "old country." Places and dates of birth, marriage, and previous residence in Germany are commonly found in these records. Dr. Minert estimates that 65-76 percent of historic local church records give an immigrant's exact place of birth. Entries found in the volumes include people born in Switzerland.

This volume has 23,683 entries which includes information on 30,000 immigrants from Germany.

Typical entries from one of these Wisconsin churches is as follows:

Christlieb August Ferdinand Eulrich b. Krossin, Pommern 22 May 1817; d. Oshkosh, WI 7 Sept 1881; bur. Oshkosh 9 Sept 1881; m. Germany Dec 1845, Ernstine Wilhelmine Radtke. He immigrated in 1862. Ref- p. 1:468.

The full narrative text of the entry would read:

Christlieb August Ferdinand Eulrich was born in Krossin, Pommern on 22 May 1817; he died in Oshkosh, WI on 7 September 1881 and was buried in Oshkosh on 9 September 1881; he was married in Germany in Dec I 845 to Emstine Wilhelmine Radtke. He immigrated in 1862. The data were found on page 468 of item 1 [of the microfilm]. (Source: Peace Lutheran Church of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., Wisconsin)
