A GLIMPSE OF A CHARMED LAND, Louis Jacobin, originally printed in 1925, this 8½ x 11 reprint describes in glowing terms, all the reasons for moving to eastern Pierce and King counties in Washington State. Jacobin was the publisher of 3 small town newspapers, Wilkeson, Black Diamond, and South Prairie, and he promotes these 3 towns and the others within a small radius. For one who has lived in this area it is interesting to view the area through the eyes of someone 77 years ago. He describes he Scenic Naches Pass Highway, The Garden of Eden (Alice O’Grady’s farm on the Green River, now a King County Park), The Green River Gorge, Lake Sawyer Paradise, and Charming Lake Retreat. Then he gets into Wilkeson, the Gateway to Carbon Glacier, and expounds on the potential for growth in the area. He describes Wilkeson Coal and Coke Company and the Walker Cut Stone Company. There are excellent illustrations of Black Diamond, Enumclaw, Buckley, Wilkeson, and South Prairie. There are even some short pieces on Fairfax, Carbonado, and Burnett. This is a very fascinating little 32-page booklet.
